Washed Out - ‘Eyes Be Closed’   Directed by Timothy Saccenti

This is the first single taken from the new Washed Out aka Ernest Greene album ‘Within & Without’

It really is a great album, familiarly swimming in synths and drenched dreamlike vocals and the pace of the tracks vary from upbeat to really down tempo. It’s brilliance is that it is quintessentiallychillwave and dream pop, but done with lo-fi means, having that ‘written in a bedroom’ philosophy.

I caught his set at Lovebox on the Friday and was really impressed by how live his set was with real instruments and not your typical backing tracks e.t.c.

The album is out now and I highly suggest if you haven’t yet check the album out and also his previous efforts.

The Drums - ‘Money’  New album  ‘Portamento’

The New York band are back with the song ‘Money’ and also a new album due out 12th September named ‘Portamento’.

It’s another example of their signature sharp fast paced pop song craft, with its lo-fi and stripped back guitar and bass lines. ‘Portamento’, is a musical term for moving from one note to another, as they feel that this sums up their musical journey.

They had been rumors that band have been on the verge of splitting a number of times after the departure of guitarist Adam Kessler.

Pierce: “Now we have an audience, we are taking into consideration the fact that we will be heard. That wasn’t the case at the time of the first record. I can’t see myself writing another song about the ocean or the beach. That’s why we’ve called the new album ‘Portamento’ - it signifies going from one point to another.”

Have a listen to ‘Money’ below:

Blood Orange - ‘Sutphin Boulevard’

Alpines - ‘Cocoon’  Directed by HOPE   ‘Released  15th August’

We featured Alpines a short while ago here with ‘Ice & Arrows’  taken from their ‘Night Drive’ Ep, and also in our ‘Spring Mix 2011’. Listen here.

They return with ‘Cocoon’ , a dark and driving single due for release on 15th August.

Its sharp and polished edges but with an edgy undercurrent will undoubtedly reach the dance floors and thrust them further into the chart limelight. Guided by the strong and identifiable vocal talent of Catherine Pockson. The high fashion video is also visually enticing which swells to a climax demanding your complete and continued attention.

They recently support ‘The Naked & Famous’ and also played slots at ‘Get Loaded In The Park’ and ‘Wireless Festival’.

These guys are a really exciting prospect and we wholeheartedly look forward to seeing them grow.

The Horrors - ‘Still Life’  Directed by Oliver Murray    ‘Skying’ released  July 11th

It was only a few weeks ago that The Horrors premiered ‘Still Life’ as the first offering from their highly anticipated third album ‘Skying’ released 11th July. It is accompanied by a psychedelic video using colours, patterns and shapes alongside retro stock footage.

Upon first listen of the album, there is a definite continuation of the sound palette of ‘Primary Colours’ , but this is even more melodic which is what the band wanted to consciously do.

‘Skying’ sees them delve deeper into their influences of 60’s Garage, Psychedelia and almost Krautrock at times, whilst there are also hints of britpop and Suede-esque vocals. It is the first album that was self-produced by the band in a homemade studio in Dalston, London. It is going to be an album that grows and demands more attention than ‘Primary Colours’.

If you haven’t heard the new album yet, you should head over to their website where it is possible to stream it in full:

Warpaint - ‘Warpaint’   Directed By  Ted Newsome

The LA all girl four piece premiere their new video for ‘Warpaint’ taken from ‘The Fool’ LP. It sees them delve into the abyss dressed in colourful sheets. The use of mirrors creates a dreamlike and escapist state that really suits their music.

This album is still very much a favorite.

Blood Orange - Coastal Grooves

Blood Orange - ‘Coastal Grooves’  released August 8th

The many guises of the talented Dev Hynes (Lightspeed Champion, Test Icicles), has now formed into ‘Blood Orange’, a project that had been in demo form for a while but now has become a record titled ‘Coastal Grooves’ due to be released by Domino on August 8th.

Hynes has been living in New York for the past three years where somehow inbetween writing and producing artists he turned these ideas into a full length album on a West Coast trip working with producer Ariel Rechtshai in LA.

Blood Orange has drawn influence from Hynes’ New York experiences, of late night walks and after hours bars, and the identities of transgender icons Octavia St Laurent. The seedy and sexualised side of New York’s night time has informed and inspired Hynes during his stateside stay.

‘Sutphin Boulevard’  is a perfect piece that defines what has influenced Hynes, grooving along in a Prince-esque like manner. It pays homage to the 808-era dance music and Chris Issak, Billy Idol, 80’s Japanese pop.

You can stream it now and also ‘Dinner’ via Domino’s Soundcloud and get an advanced Free Download: ‘Sutphin Boulevard’ MP3 Giveaway.

Absolutely love this track and really look forward to hearing more. Yet again Dev Hynes has shown himself to be a clever and contemporary artist who develops and redefines what influences him.

Battles - ‘Ice Cream’ (Featuring Matias Aguayo)  Directed by Canada

Ltd Edition Flavored 12” Vinyls.
http://bttls.com/icecream/

Battles have released Ltd Edition 12” vinyls in 3 Flavors for the single ‘Ice Cream’, taken from their newly released album ‘Gloss Drop’.

So the choices are ‘Strawberry, Vanilla and Chocolate designed sleeves with matching coloured vinyl. It all looks pretty appetizing, although I wouldn’t try licking them as they are purely an aesthetic idea not an edible one.

I’m sure they have proven popular but if your lucky they may have some left by visiting the Battles webiste via the link above.

Nice idea tho.
